increase the renta accordingly an the Railway showed an
increase of traffic.
Lo u Bridge and Station,
Ar. Barry fully concurred
in the decision to build a Stasion at Lo Ru and also to
raise the bridge sa requested by Mr. Grove. He explained
to the Chief Resid ́nt Engineer his proposals for the con-
-struction of the Bridge for a double rail.
Taipo Bridge.
This technical engineering ques”
-tion was settled. The main points being that the 100
foot span no longer required at Lo Pu should be utilised
that the bank facing the incoming stream should be pitched
to avoid scour, and the toe of the inner bank out off to
assist in guiding the water to the bridge site. The
Director of Public Works agreed to these proposals.
Leigh and Orange's Contract.
The negotiations have
been suspended unsil I could take advintage of Mr. Barry's
advice. On arrival he told me the Consulting Engineers had
long been uneasy about the heighth of the deep outting 210
foet. ¡ie knew of no parallel case and he thought it a
danger. A land slide night block the Railway for several
months. Unless the top of the hill could be cut off for
100 or 110 fuat he thought a covered way would be necessary
with a cushion or earth on top. In that case he would not
wish Leigh and Orange to axcavate below the level of the
top of the cushion. This would be a disturbance of their
contract and they might claim compensation. The Chief
Resident Engineer pointed out that the Contrsøt allowed a
25% alteration and this would not involve more than 5%.
Mr. Barry concurred that in that case the Contract would
be unaïfected. The covered way would be about 400 Zeet
long and it was agreed that it would be better to spend
the money in cutting off the top of the hill, the Railway
to provide the cost up to and somewhat in excess of the cost estimated for the covered way (since it would be
preferable from a railway point of view to have a raduoed
depth
